The 1970s were the golden age of the American “land yacht.” These massive full size cars were built with one goal in mind: maximum comfort. Long hoods, enormous trunks, ultra soft suspension, pillow-like bench seats, and enough chrome to blind you in the sun defined the era. Driving one felt less like operating a car and more like captaining a boat down the highway.
Some of the most iconic land yachts came from Cadillac, Lincoln, Buick, and Chrysler. Cars like the Cadillac Eldorado, Lincoln Continental, Chrysler New Yorker, and Buick Electra 225 stretched over 18 feet long and weighed well over 5,000 pounds. Some had massive 500 cubic inch V8 engines that delivered smooth effortless cruising, even if fuel economy was absolutely terrible.
