The Porsche 911’s rear-mounted engine was originally a temporary compromise born from Dr. Ferdinand Porsche’s failed mid-engine prototype in the early 1960s, which proved unstable and difficult to cool, so the team moved the engine to the back as a “quick fix”—only to discover the configuration was so dynamically superior that it became the defining characteristic of every 911 ever built, making one of automotive history’s greatest design decisions essentially an accident.
