Strong Alley—affectionately known as Graffiti Alley—is a vibrant corridor tucked between Market Square and Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Open 24/7 and free to the public, this ever-changing outdoor art gallery offers an immersive walk through some of the city’s boldest and most creative murals.
Originally transformed in 2012 through the “Artist Alley Revamp” initiative led by Jayne McGowan and supported by Dogwood Arts, Strong Alley has evolved from random tags to curated, high-quality street art. Local artists are invited to paint new murals each year, ensuring the space is constantly refreshed with new visuals and voices.
Murals range from vivid abstracts and nature scenes to local icons like the beloved Dolly Parton mural—recently restored by artist Megan Lingerfelt. In fact, Megan’s seasonal series of floral murals has become a standout feature, with the latest celebrating summer and the Olympic spirit through a diving-themed design along Union Avenue.
Today, Strong Alley is one of the most photographed spots in Knoxville. It brings together art lovers, tourists, and locals alike. Whether you’re passing through early in the morning for golden-hour shots or visiting after a summer rain when the colors are their most vibrant, it’s a must-see experience.
