Sparrows Point, Maryland is one of the most historically significant industrial sites in the United States. Located on a peninsula southeast of Baltimore along the Chesapeake Bay, it became synonymous with American steel production for more than a century.
The site’s industrial story began in 1887, when the Pennsylvania Steel Company built a massive steel mill at Sparrows Point. The location was ideal because ships could easily bring in iron ore and coal while finished steel could be shipped out around the world. The mill quickly expanded and eventually became part of Bethlehem Steel, one of the largest steel companies in American history.
