The Lancia Stratos’s wedge-shaped design was so extreme that it created a dangerous aerodynamic phenomenon: at speeds above 180 km/h, the car would generate so much lift under the nose that the front wheels could lose contact with the road during hard braking, forcing Lancia to add a small front splitter that was almost invisible to the eye but hydraulically deployed during high-speed driving to prevent the car from becoming briefly airborne when decelerating.
