During the 1960s Indy 500, some teams discovered that running slightly rich fuel mixtures during qualifying would coat the engine internals with extra fuel residue, which then burned more efficiently during the race itself—so mechanics would intentionally “foul” the engine between sessions, turning what seemed like a mistake into a hidden performance advantage that officials never quite managed to police.
