1999 Land Rover Discovery 1 brake work – what did it cost?

Finally, it was the 1999 Land Rover Discovery 1’s turn for some TLC! I hired the job out to a local garage to replace the brake master cylinder, brake lines, pads, and some other miscellaneous work. I’ll discuss what it cost and briefly walk around my 1999 Land Rover Discovery 1.

The Land Rover Discovery 1, also known as the Discovery Series I, was the first generation of the Land Rover Discovery line of SUVs. It was produced by the British manufacturer Land Rover from 1989 to 1998. The Discovery 1 was designed to fill the gap between the utilitarian Land Rover Defender and the more luxurious Range Rover.

Here are some key features and characteristics of the Land Rover Discovery 1:

Design: The Discovery 1 had a boxy and rugged design, reminiscent of other Land Rover models. It featured a spacious interior with seating for up to seven passengers, thanks to a folding rear bench seat. It had a two-box design with a separate body and frame construction.

Off-road capabilities: Like other Land Rover vehicles, the Discovery 1 excelled in off-road performance. It came with a permanent four-wheel-drive system, solid axles, and a two-speed transfer case for improved off-road traction. It also had generous ground clearance and excellent approach and departure angles.

Engine options: The Discovery 1 offered a range of engine options throughout its production years. Initially, it was introduced with a 3.5-liter V8 engine, producing around 134 horsepower. Later, Land Rover introduced a 200Tdi 2.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine and a 3.9-liter V8 petrol engine.

Transmission options: The Discovery 1 came with a variety of transmission options. Initially, it had a five-speed manual transmission, and later, a four-speed automatic transmission became available as an option.

Safety and features: The safety features of the Discovery 1 were relatively basic compared to modern SUVs. It had anti-lock brakes (ABS) and optional driver and passenger airbags. Other notable features included power windows, air conditioning, and a sunroof.

Popularity and legacy: The Discovery 1 gained popularity for its capable off-road performance, spacious interior, and overall versatility. It established the Discovery line as a successful addition to the Land Rover family. Its design and capabilities set the foundation for future generations of the Discovery.

Overall, the Land Rover Discovery 1 was a robust and capable SUV that appealed to both off-road enthusiasts and those seeking a comfortable and practical family vehicle. Its rugged design, off-road prowess, and versatile seating options made it a popular choice among adventure-seeking individuals.
